About
Here is one for all you VW fans. As far as I know, this theme and style has never been tried. For this one, I was thinking about the look of some of the early hiboy hot rods and started imaging a chopped bug in place of the body. Way cool. This is the first concept sketch. I’ve always liked Jim Ewing’s Super Bell Coupe for the low slung stance he achieved, and how he made low-cost orange paint and low-cost (call them “pickled”) unpolished Halibrands work for a great retro theme. This was back when you built your car in your own garage. No mega-dollar stuff. This is perfect as this is where the VW crowd is right now. So how about a Super Bell Tribute Bug using the same orange paint and “pickled” Hals. The side view shows it channeled over a Deuce frame with the WB increased by 1 inch (to 107”). I re-proportioned the look to fit the smaller size. I added a ‘34 Ford windshield (so the top header will need some work) and redoing the leading edge of the doors and/or adding a body reveal line is entirely up to you. I read where the original coupe had serious cooling problems with that narrow nose, but the good news is this tribute hot rod bug will never have that issue. So I ask, What other coupes and roadsters could we remake as a VW? How about a Jake Jacob’s yellow hiboy? How about a Jack Calori’s ‘36 custom type Heb? This is open territory.
