Bought at the Pomona Swap Meet January of ‘99. Has since gone through 6 or 7 motors due to shoddy builds (not mine) or just abuse (my fault)
Presently has IRS conversion done to the rear. Franklin’s VW Werks 4” narrowed beam with 2 1/2” dropped spindles. Type 4 VW calipers up front with Type 1 rotors. Rear is a complete rear disc brake conversion from CB Performance. Transmission came from a ‘68 Beetle converted to IRS via Erco super diff and Erco heavy duty side plate with many added features within. Ratio is 4.12:1. Engine presently in it is a 1600cc dual port with Dual 36mm Dellorto DRLA carburetors. The motor in the works is a 2110cc but not quite built yet. Wheels are New Beetle steel wheels with some paint alterations done by me. Brakes are CB Performance front and rear disc. Lots of stopping here! Paint job is rattle can, tribals took approximately 5 days to do via pencil and masking, also done by me. Interior has been modded as well, but only in appearance. Scat shifter, small sound system, new upholstery done via TMI kit and my patience. Doors, kickboards, and headliner are speaker carpet from Home Depot. All panels also lined with Dynamat Xtreme sound dampener., rather quiet inside. Many lights converted to LED with many more to come. Headlights are HID.
Current height of bus at drip rail behind driver door is ~60”. No use of airbags or hydraulics here, it’s a hell of a rubbin’ / scrapin’ ride here and fun all the way down the road.
