Hot Rod Nightmare

AFordabelle gets a

AFordabelle gets a "botched" face lift to the tune of $76K

Well we got our rod out of the hands of the rip off artist and are not real happy with the results but are dealing with it. Anyone reading this if you have any idea of how to get one of these rip off artists to pay let me know. This guy kept baiting us every month making us think it was the last leg and finally we said enough is enough after giving him $76,000. Now we have issues with the car that should never appear on a car that was built for that kind of money and that’s all labor that does not count the parts which we paid for ourselves. This guy actually had the balls to write an appraisal for this car for $168,000 which if any of you looked at this car when we got it out of his shop you would laugh your butt off at this appraisal. I mean the car looks sharp in pictures but for a man that nit-picked everything the previous man did should be ashamed to put out a product like this. Major engine leak, fuel issues, wiring issues, hoses routed dangerously and unprotected, electrical components installed wrong and don’t work or short out, the list goes on and is documented. Mind you this $76K does not even include the interior. Anyone reading this if you have any idea how to help us get to the right people or whatever we need to go after this guy we would appreciate the help. We live in Upper Michigan but we need to take the car somewhere that someone will actually make us a timeline of how long it would be estimated the actual building of this car should have taken. This car was already built once and this was a re-do. We have all the documentation and pictures up to certain points in the timeline. This guy supplied a number of hours each month but no detail on what they did for those hours (2,108 of which some are double billed). The car appearance didn’t change at all in most months that he charged for many hours and this is when we started asking many questions. Wiring and the final body paint and assembly we were billed the largest portion of the money mounting to approximately $50K. This job we were told in the beginning would be $20-$40 range and it hit $76K and would have gone higher if we hadn’t pulled the car. We did not take the car back for any repairs to work already done as the same day we tried to pick the car up we had to return it for a fueling problem and the guy charged us $500 more to re-do it and still the issue wasn’t fixed. Bearing in mind this car was stripped down to the bare frame by this shop and rebuilt up fixing so called flaws this work was surely under shop warranty for their work so we thought. Turns out his word on shop warranty is no better than his word on the price of the job before tearing the car apart and ripping us along the build. All legit shops should be totally pissed at people like this guy! He is a disgrace to the honest hot rod builders and this man is a local business here in a small town. Gives a ton of credit to the phrase “shop local” especially when no other business locally will do anything to help get things righted. No thanks to the town of Shaffer, MI Lantagne’s Body Shop on shop local! This stuff needs to be exposed and we have no clue how to expose it. I am sure we are not the only couple that has gone through this.

GET YOUR BEFORE PIC’S OF THE CAR & THE ONES AFTER HE DID THE WORK & TAKE HIS ASS TO COURT. I WISH YOU ALL THE BEST. THERE’S ALOT OF SO CALLED HOT ROD BUILDERS THESE DAYS. ALOT OF THE BIG NAME SHOPS KNOW WHAT THE HELL THERE DOING & PEOPLE FREAK WHEN THEY HEAR THE PER HOUR COST. THING IS IT TAKES THEM HALF THE TIME TO DO IT,CUZ THEY HAVE DONE IT 100 TIMES BEFORE. I’AM SURE THERE’S GUY’S ON THE SITE THAT HAVE HAD THE SAME DONE TO THEM & MIGHT BE ABLE TO TELL YOU WHICH WAY TO GO. HEARD A STORY ABOUT A PAINTER THAT GOT STIFF ON A HOT ROD HE PAINTED BY THE OWNER & HE TOOK HIM TO COURT. GUESS WHAT THE JUDGE ALMOST LAUGH IN HIS FACE,SAYING TO HIM THERE’S NO PAINT JOB COSTS THAT. THE CAR WAS ON THE COVER OF HOT ROD IN THE 80’S & IT’S WELL KNOWN.

We have everything well documented and do plan on taking him to court. Our time line shows a lot of what really went on and we were very skeptical of what was going on so we documented more and more. Trust me anyone that reads this take heed and pay the garage that costs $100 an hour because you will end up paying them in the end to get it done right anyway. Don’t trust anyone and pull your car if things are going bad. In the end you will pay if you don’t. Its not an easy decision but if you don’t want to end up like us you better do it. We are having a hard time in our area finding an attorney that isn’t related to someone related to this guy as with shops. We are traveling down to either Wisconsin or Lower Michigan this summer to try to get someone to help us. The hard part is no one wants to commit to how long this really should take to build this car. We are willing to pay a good hot rod builder with the time to do this for us. Finding him is the problem. This guy actually was billing us double meaning that he was charging us for two people per day to work on this car so he was charging us big bucks. He does a lot of insurance work so I am also going to send to every BBB a report on the rip off and inflated appraisal. I am going to see the prosecuting attorney next week to discuss this with him since its such a large amount of money that you could say was charged as ransom for our car. This guy thinks he did a really big favor to us and we have that in writing. I have never done anyone a favor that cost them money like this.

AutoKraft you are probably better off being the way you are and doing right by people. Good to know there are honest people out there because we found some pretty dishonest ones in our 6 year build. Scammed by King Cobra in St Paul, MN and by Mike Janey in Spooner, WI then to take it local and this guy decides to jump on the band wagon. Those two were exposed by others but the references lied to us when we called them to ask about the work because these two had them into them for thousands and they were afraid to say anything. It’s a racket for dishonesty that needs to be busted!! The worse part is trying to find people who can do anything about it. Which is where we are now. No one cares if these people rip you off.

The best thing, anyone can do, to prevent this situation, is educate yourself. Don’t become an easy target. This applies not just to classic car/motorcycle restoration or Hot Rod building but to anything that requires contracting labor. There are a lot of dishonest people in business and they prey on the uninformed. Today, all the information you could ever need is right here on the internet. Joining forums like the HAMB are helpful too. Lots of knowledge on that forum once you get past the lurkers. They can provide references and you could probably find a knowledgable person in your area that can assist you also. Good Luck.
