Water Borne paint???

posted in: donali garage, news on February 03, 2009 at 09:10 PM

OK it’s going to be mandatory in Canada,I’ve taken the course’s which was pretty simple if you have basic paint skill’s you can use water borne. My question is how does it work out over time,uv,durability,I’ve been told by the paint rep’s it better than the system we’re using now But they are REP’S.All I see is the GM car’s from the ‘80’s and some of the DODGE’S with all the paint peeling. So if you have used this paint system I would love to hear your input.

My question is how long are we here in the midwest with its high humidity going to have to wait in between coats with a water based paint system? Is it going to be like the early lacquers with a blushing problem? I think its time for me to start stocking up on HoK clear and basecoat before they make it illegal.

It’s my understanding that for best rsults you should use some sort of drying system. Evaporation is key!! I do small paint repairs onsite for car dealers. I wonder how this stuff will do in a spot repair!!!

Have you tried that clear from Summit Racing yet? I am betting that it is Valspar seeing as how they also sell HoK,Duplicolor and Plastikote which is all Valspar. I just got a gallon of it yesterday and will be spraying it tomorrow. Its a real high solids clear with a lot of weight to it and it only cost $99.80 for the whole gallon system delivered to my front door. I am usually leary of trying something new but this is a small panel so if it doesnt spray out good I can trash it. I am a huge fan of HoK UC35 clear. Advanced Auto parts has started to sell Lacquer paints by the gallon on their shelves. we are talking primers, basecoats and clear. I have never even sprayed lacquer but I have heard of the nightmares from spraying it.

I’d like to hear how it goes with the clear. I have used waterborne bases, but have not ventured into the clears, as I’m leary of the long term durability & UV protection.

How did you like the waterborne base? Durability and longterm along with distinctive of image is what we are concerned with also. Streetrodder magazine just had an article on this clear but no one has said anything about the car sitting on the blacktop at the Streetrod Nationals in Louisville. Will that be where the clear starts to gass off and leaves you looking shrunk and dull?We are about to find out as I will be putting this panel under a UV light and will bake it to see what happens. maybe I should do a blog about this Summit clear ,the good, the bad and the ugly.

The base was fine, easy to spray, have had no fading or discolorations, limited color selection, but cleaning up with water, while nice, was just plain unnatural. I’ve been around this stuff since I was knee high to a grasshopper & you always use lacquer thinner or other solvent to clean up…
