Premature wear of rack and Pinion

posted in: vierstra design garage, news on August 16, 2010 at 11:18 AM

I have a question and hope that someone may give me some advice. Does anyone know if a rear end collision would possibly cause the rack and pinion steering to wear out prematurely on a front wheel drive ‘06 Impala LTZ? The car was hit hard enough to have the drivers’ insurance pay out just over $10k in repairs. That was two years ago. Now the car has 56K Miles on the clock.

Any thoughts out there?

Is it 56,000 highway miles or 56,000 miles in the walmart parking lot? Driving habits can play a huge role in how long steering parts will last. Some poeple do alot of their turning when the car is not moving. Having worked at a GM dealership and pushing alot of non running cars into the shop, I learned that it is a ton easier to steer when the car is rolling a little first (and alot easier on the mechanical parts that actually do the work).

Thanks Fordy. This does make sense. Most of the miles are freeway. My wife likes to drive the car locally and makes all these short trips around town. So what your saying is…that the accident may not be the cause of premature wear? Basically, driving habits in parking lots, driveways and turn lights?

Unless there is a serious handling problem and you are constantly “sawing at the wheel” I can’t see the rack wearing out – even if the alignment is wacked, the tires would wear but I doubt that it would affect the steering parts.

My struts are gone too. I am having the struts replaced this week.
I am sure it can magnify the problem. I was told by a local Mechanic (which there are hundreds) but this guy has been very honest in the past. He said that my R&P steering and struts a worn and need replacing. There’s moderate bounce and Steering “pops” too when turning at a light (accelerating from a stop).
