How Jay Leno got his 1991 GMC Syclone pickup truck for Christmas.

This story was told to me by Jay Leno after a week of work was finished having his home garages redone for the TV show Garage Mahal on the DIY network. All the TV show taping was over and I asked him about his Syclone pickup truck in the garage.

It was Christmas time of 1992, Jay and his wife Mavis traveled down the hill from their house to a Christmas tree lot in the Beverly Hills area of Los Angeles. After looking around for a while they decide on a tree to buy. Paying for his tree Jay informed the Christmas tree vendor he would need his tree delivered because they drove down in a car. Jay must not be the type that straps a Christmas tree on top a car to get it home…He gives his home address to the Christmas tree vendor for directions but is stopped by the vendor mid sentence. The vendor tells Jay his house is outside of their delivery area by one mile. Jay asked if he could still get the tree delivered and so the Christmas tree vendor thought about it and said yes but would need to charge him extra for driving that extra mile. After buying the tree for a premium price to begin with Jay was dumbfounded for a second and asked how much would it cost then to deliver the Christmas tree. An extra $60 dollars the vendor said he would charge for the delivery. Jay was sort of taken back by the price and not happy about it also. He thought for a minute rubbing his famous chin and decided that’s just not right! Jay looked across the street then turned to the Christmas tree vendor and said, “I’ll be right back!” Jay then proceeded to walk across the street from the Christmas tree lot to the local Chevy/GMC car dealer. There he asked a fortunate salesman what’s the fastest pickup truck you got on the lot for sale? An hour later after proudly paying the car dealer with a check, Jay drove back across the street to the Christmas tree lot and asked the vendor to load the Christmas tree in his truck.

Jay still owns his 1991 GMC Syclone and drives it monthly, it’s the truck he keeps in his home garage…

I’ll bet the cost is still over $1,000 a trip, it would only be about 20 trees by now, 20 years later…Jay did laugh and say, I taught him a lesson huh.

I guess it’s the point! Sometimes it just doesn’t matter!

You can’t take it with you! He must have some sleepless nights trying to figure out new ways to spend all that green.
