How do you deal with stuff you just know nothing about?

How do you deal with stuff you just know nothing about?

I’ve been around for a while and had a bit to do with cars all my life in form or another, Street machines , muscle cars , sports cars and some exotics; and being a little old school I understand 90% of what goes into a car. I started the rebuild on my Coupe some 3 to 4 years ago and somewhere in there with some outside influence decided to go Hi Tech, and by Hitech I mean Fuel Injection, Electronics and Turbo Charging and replacing the whole floor pan with a Morrison Chassis etc. I suppose this is where the dilemna comes to play, I know a lot about the old school stuff- (Holley Carbs, Big Cams, High Compression Pistons, Toploader gearboxes and the like) but not a lot about the new stuff, albeit I am on a swift learning curve be it an expensive one but its a learning curve; I have been listening, talking to people in the trade and different suppliers here and the USA but it seems no one is on the same wavelength – So who do we listen to and how do you make a judgement call on the best products/ methods to get the finished product right? I don’t think I’ll be the only one out there with these issues?

You have a point John. I am sure there’s plenty of resto-mods out there. Any good shops out there willing to help John with some new-tech questions?

Hey Don, The issue is that they all in some way or another seem to have a difference of opinion, and there are plenty of opinions and options but which way is right and which way is wrong???

My opinion is that I love fuel injection and there is no other fuel efficient way to get horsepower and fuel economy at the same time. All of the builds that we do now are fuel injected. We use Detail Zone harnesses and they do all of our programming. No carb rebuilding involved, no jetting involved, no blown power valves and the list goes on and on about the proven performance of fuel injection. But thats just my opinion and that with 50 cents will get you across town on a public transportation bus.lol

I too have these very same issues. From what little I know the new stuff is better and can be made to look super, but like a bunch of older guys I have no idea of the insides of these things work.

Thanks Zig, I suppose the frustration comes from buying stuff, then having to revisit the same thing over again – Eg: Turbo’s When I first started the dudes I spoke to wanted to flog me GT40’s and these things were massive even I knew they were far too big – spoke to the engine builder who then referred me to someone else – which I then purchased GT35 with .63AR housing – now I have to send them back cause they know that .63 are too small and need to go to .83AR housings and it was the same story with wastegates too small send them back get bigger ones ETC EtC Etc., winding my way through it as we go at a cost though. But I am learning!

Thanks Randall, I suppose it must be the intrigue of playing around with things we don’t understand and not wanting to be left behind by the young guns out there that makes us do it as well.
John.
