1959 Pontiac 389 Timing Chain Replacement
Okay Guys…The Blue Bomber needs a new timing chain…bad. When I replaced the fuel pump, the chain is visible through the hole in the housing. It is severely sloppy, but the engine runs fine. It does run hot and won’t keep time.
Now for the nitty gritty. I have replaced countless timing chains on SB & BB Chevy’s, but never on a big 389 Pontiac. Is there anything I need to look out for?
It looks straight forward and easier than a Chevy, because you don’t have to drop the pan, but like I said, never done one of these great motors before. It does rattle when it first starts up, but goes away in five seconds. It will also rattle at high revs, but nothing serious. I suspect this is the timing chain and I’m going to replace it regardless, but just wanted to know if any of the great guru’s here have any special tips or tricks!
I look forward to hearing from you!
