About
This car came from Oregon, to Canada. When I bought it, it had a 289 with the original 2 speed auto transmission. It originally had a 260 V8 and a split bench seat, but these were swapped, sometime before I got it, for the 289 and a set of bucket seats and a console, likely from a Galaxie. Soon after I started driving it, the engine began making a horrible knocking sound. I pulled the engine and found that the torque converter and flywheel were not matched properly, so the flywheel acted like a spring and slowly forced the crank forward in the engine, until it began hitting the main caps. I bought a 1978 Mustang II that had been in a collision and took the engine and 3 speed automatic transmission out of it. These were put in the fairlane. I have since had the transmission rebuilt, with a B&M street/strip kit installed. The engine was already fresh when I got it, with an Edelbrock Torker II manifold, Holley 4010 4 barrel carb and an aftermarket camshaft. It runs really well. I like the graffiti style, so I put lake pipes on the car and grafted 1959 Cadillac tail light bullets into the Fairlane ones. What started out to be a simple repaint of the car has turned into a long drawn out process that I have yet to complete. The car was completely dismantled, stripped of all paint/primer, sanded, wire wheeled, sealed with PPG DP40 and coated with 2 layers of PPG K200, which is how it is today. I also frenched 2 antannae holes into the rear fenders, replaced the rusty trunk floor with a rust free one I got from a donor car, painted the engine area with semi-gloss epoxy, and completed any body work with lead, instead of plastic body filler, thanks to my now deceased friend, Dani Moses, for showing me how to do it. I am still working up to all the sanding of the primer, and have only recently begun to see examples of the colour I really want on the car. My friend’s son is an upholsterer and does great work, so I may turn the car over to him for a custom interior. I am replacing the low back buckets that came with the car, with high back buckets that came from an ‘80’s Thunderbird. Electric, of course. I have always loved this car, and will love it even more when it is finished. Now, if I could just find some extra time! LOL!
